Tea Break Crafting: Sparkly Ghost Bookmarks

Yes…they do look a bit like Hattifatteners from The Moomins, don’t they?

These little fellas are perfect for crafting with kids, or yourself if like me you are a Moshi Monsters-obsessed nine year old trapped in the body of a woman in her thirties… Anyway, moving on, you will need the following supplies:

  • Lollipop sticks
  • Waterbased enamel paint in white and black
  • Assorted seed beads
  • Strong craft glue
  • Paintbrush
  • A very fine paintbrush

  • Oh, and iridescent glitter! Don’t forget him…

1. Start by painting the lollipop sticks with a coat of white waterbased enamel. Apply a few coats to build up the white colour, allowing for drying time in between. Drying time tends to be quite quick, as the wood absorbs a lot of the enamel.

2. Immediately after painting on the last layer of paint, sprinkle over a coating of fine iridescent glitter. Leave to stick for a few seconds before shaking off the excess. It’s best to do each stick in turn, so the paint doesn’t dry out before you add the glitter.

3. Leave to dry. Go have a cartoon and cookie break. You can’t beat one of those.

4. Use the strong craft glue to attach seed bead eyes to your ghosts.

5. Using a fine-tipped paintbrush and the black waterbased enamel, add mouths to your ghosts.

Spooky, Sparkly Spectres.

If you’re worried about the glitter rubbing off all over the pages of your books, wait until the features are completely dry, and finish each ghost with a coating of clear waterbased varnish to seal in the sparkle. I used the gloss variety from Fimo.

And there you have it. A cold and miserable October afternoon filled by some quick ghostly crafts! I’m sure my family and friends will scream with glee as I gift them these wailing oddbods… ;D
